Victorian Farmhouse Restoration – Isfield, East Sussex
Isfield has a lot of historic Wealden houses, many timber-framed originally, but in the 19th century wealthier families built brick and tile Gothic villas like this one.
This stunning Victorian farmhouse, dating from around 1850–1880, was in a tired state when we were first called to the property. Much of the external woodwork had deteriorated, with rotten sections throughout the upper windows and gable ends requiring extensive splicing and replacement.
We erected full scaffolding to give us safe access to every elevation and began the project in July, making excellent progress thanks to the good weather. Our team carried out careful repairs and detailed decoration, ensuring the property received the love, care, and attention to detail it deserves so it can be enjoyed for many more years to come.
Timber Replacements Commence
Midway through, we paused to allow the carpenter restoration team to complete essential timber replacements. By the time we returned in September, the scaffolding had been removed at the client’s request. To continue, we worked from a large cherry picker, which, while temperamental at times, gave us the access we needed. To protect the immaculate lawn, we carefully used track pads under every wheel — a good example of the extra measures we take to safeguard each client’s home and surroundings.
Attention to detail, whatever the shape, angle or material…
If you browse through a small selection of our many images of this project below you’ll see some of the areas before, during and after renovation. Whether it was the ironwork on gates, wooden gables with bargeboards or door furniture itself, the results really do speak for themselves.
A proud restoration and another satisfied customer!
Despite challenges the project was completed to a high standard, and the farmhouse now stands proudly restored. We left with another very satisfied customer, which is always our ultimate goal.

This project in Isfield was at our house, and as you can see it was a tricky one to restore the outside of a 16th century cottage with Victorian adaptations that hadn’t been touched for 25yrs+ so was in a real state.
I couldn’t recommend Mark and his team at Heritage Decorating highly enough. Mark and team are incredibly good decorators, hard working, very high attention to detail, and very flexible as we had a lot of delays and coordination with other trades, even having to finish the job on a (problematic) cherry picker as scaffolding came down early. Mark is a very nice guy, as an ex-military Guardsman his attention to detail, work ethic and running a team shines through. First class company and team to deal with.
